Weight Gain and Insulin Resistance

If you experience any of these symptoms it's possible that Insulin Resistance is the culprit. What is Insulin Resistance? All major carbohydrates contain Glucose. Glucose is a fancy name for the naturally occurring sugars that are found in carbohydrates like grains (wheat, rice, etc) that are used to make breads and sugary sweets. Each time you eat these carbohydrates, your pancreas produces insulin. Insulin's purpose is to stop the glucose from getting into your fat cells. You know how you hate to take cold medicine? Well your fat cells are the same way. They don't like Insulin very much so they "resist" the Insulin. However, your fat cells LOVE Glucose so they try to horde as much of the Glucose as they can. When the Glucose makes it into the fat cells, you gain weight. Since the insulin can't get into that fat cells, it can't break that Glucose down. If the Glucose makes it to fat cells after every meal, then you will slowly gain weight. There are two very basic actions you can take to prevent the resulting weight gain caused by this insulin resistance. Exercise More. I know, "exercise" is a dirty word to most of us. However, Glucose is also the fuel that feeds your muscles when you exercise. If you can get the glucose to feed your muscles before it sprints to your fat cells, you will stop the weight gain process. Exercise doesn't have to be that insane and boring cardio classes you see in the gyms. Anything that uses your muscles like walking, dancing, jumping rope or hula hoop will work. Eat fewer Carbohydrates. We all need some carbohydrates to function effectively. However, the more processed the carbohydrates are, the more Glucose enters your system. To determine how processed your carbohydrates are, look at the Nutritional label on the foods you're eating. Look for the following items listed on your Nutritional label: - Dietary Fiber
- Sugars
- Other Carbohydrates
It's simple. You want the "Sugars" and the "Other Carbohydrates" numbers to be very low and the "Dietary Fiber" number to be high. Use this simple rule when comparing products at the grocery store.
