Hunting Mountain Lion

Looking to get the heart pumping and the blood flowing? If you have never tried hunting mountain lions, you you have not experienced the meaning of excitement! There is nothing like hunting a big game cat, these large cats are powerful predators that can kill large animals. So be careful when tracking these cats, that you're not the one being hunted.

Mountain lions are extremely elusive and usually avoid direct contact with people. Masters of camouflage, they often remain hidden when approached closely on foot. So it is probably a good idea that we learn a little bit about the habitat and the habits of this majestic animal before you go traipsing off into the wilderness.

Studies show that about 70 percent of their total diet is deer. So if you happen to run across a large heard of deer, there is most probably a mountain lion lurking near. Adult males may be more than 8 feet in length and weigh an average of 150 pounds. Adult females may be up to 7 feet long and weigh an average of 90 pounds.

The mountain lion is a territorial creature. The territory for males is on average around 300 square miles and about 80 to 100 square miles for a female. They travel about an average of 20 miles per day. They like to stalk and ambush their prey. They are usually most active from dusk to dawn. They like areas with a lot of under brush. After spotting a prey, a lion will stalk them using the available cover and then attack with a rush from behind. They usually kill their prey with a powerful bite to the neck. Their natural enemies include other large predators such as bears and wolves.

Tracking a mountain lion takes knowledge and skill and sometimes just plain dumb luck. You will need to determine what a mountain lion track looks like and how to tell the difference from other animals. The mountain lion has four toes and a pad. The front two toes are not lined up side to side. The leading toe will tell you if it is the right or left paw print. The leading toe is on the inside of the paw. The pad has three parts that are aligned with each other.

Some hunters like to use a predator call. The main draw back to using a predator call is that there is a relatively small population of mountain lions and the chance that they will hear the call is slim. The most successful method of hunting a mountain lion is right after a snow storm using a well trained pack of hounds. This makes it easier track and you know that animal is only a short distant from you.

Think safety when hunting a mountain lion. Remember when hunting a lion that you could also be the hunted. Do not run from a mountain lion, running can stimulate their basic instincts to attack. Stand still and face the animal and make eye contact. Do not squat, crouch or bend this presents an image of four-legged prey animal. Appear more threatening to the lion and if you are attacked fight back.
