The GPS System
GPS Systems are all the rave in the motor vehicle industry today and continue to grow in popularity as people begin to travel more via their vehicle instead of by plane, train, or bus. GPS stands for Global Positioning System. The GPS system was developed by the United States Department of Defense and is used by civilians to find their exact position on the map when driving around the state or the country. Its official name is the NAVSTAR GPS and is monitored by the United States Air Force 50th Space Wing. The GPS system operates on anywhere from 24-32 medium earth orbit satellites that help people tell the time, their location and their velocity. GPS systems have become increasingly popular because of how helpful they are for drivers traveling in unfamiliar areas. GPS wasn't always available for civilians. It wasn't made available until 1983 when United States President Ronald Reagan declared that the public should be able to use it for the common good. GPS is also used for map-making, land surveying, commerce, scientific uses, and geocaching. So how does one calculate their position on the earth? A GPS system calculates its position on the earth by timing the signals sent by the GPS satellites in outer space. This system is used to help the United States military forces when fighting foreign wars or when performing maneuvers in foreign lands find their destination without using a paper map. GPS systems are also used by airplane pilots, helicopter pilots, police officers, fire fighters, emergency services personnel, and civilians alike. Not only are GPS systems available for purchase at your local hardware or electronic store, they are also offered as a standard or optional feature in brand new cars upon purchase. That's right; now cars are coming equipped with GPS systems upon purchase. They are usually built into the dash board in the center of the console in between the driver's seat and the passenger seat. There will be a small TV screen on the console and there the driver or passenger can access the car's built in GPS system and obtain directions to their desired destination. If you do not want one built into your car because you want to be able to shift it from one car to another, then you should purchase a free standing GPS system at a hardware store or an electronic store. There are GPS systems available for purchase that are the size of portable radios that can be mounted to the dashboard of your car and then you will be able to transport the GPS system from one car to another instead of it being forever mounted in one car. With the advancement in modern technology today, GPS systems are now available in cell phones. You can access your navigator in your phone, type in your starting address, type in your ending address, and the system will navigate the trip for you. Most systems in cell phones have a narrating voice that tells you how far to travel on each road and when and where to turn on or off of the road. GPS systems can be expensive but are well worth it when traveling unfamiliar roads. ebay Auto Transport ebay Auto Shipping
